cmsa, division of lost angels; Today's post inspired by one from Willits Center for the Arts (fast becoming a beacon for the community and representing the best of willits!!!). It was about how artists should not expect a living from their work ; true that! (for 99% of us), but i object too;
artists like a roof over their heads, food in the belly, and reasonable healthcare, just like everyone else, (especially old artists!!)...if you have to work a day job you usually dont' have the energy for the 50+ hours most spend in the studio each week as well...there's the rub; yes, it's a vocation instead of a career, but that doesn't mean we can live on air! i recall what someone from the willits center for the arts told me recently; " that the art center is for the community , not the artists", and i was very disappointed to hear that, If the art centers won't support us, who will?

cmsa, division of lost angels; All my life up until a few years ago, christmas was a family experience, so at first it was hard to wrap my mind around the idea of christmas for one, but i'm getting into it this year, and it's a great opportunity to practice the "self-love" i've been hearing so much about lately... only tricky part was rediscovering the lumpy ceramics and handmade ornaments with handprints my boys brought home over the course of their childhood...they'll always make the mama in me cry.

cmsa; Laying in opaque, wet into wet "brushy" light areas over glazes feels like sculpting on an armature. I love the sense of volume it gives ....WIP; "jungle Boy"

cmsa; Thanks Kevin Flint for turning me on to this artist (robo lights guy in palm springs) He reminds me of a criticism of myself from many years ago " the artist seems conflicted between dreams and nightmares"( Ruth Weisburg) for artweek). Anyway you'll never see xmas the same!

haven't driven east to palm springs in many moons, happy to see the dinos seem well cared for, but sad that iconic diner's gone, remember it sold tacky lacquered redwood slabs?
Photo #2
Robo lights sculptures reminded me alot of Bruegel, this one blew me away and gave me the creeps .
Photo #3
Ditto this one (gave me the creeps) . I'm sure it will inspire a painting called "brave new world"
Photo #4
i thought i had seen every "alt. medium" known to man in the art of the last generation (Tar, tooth picks , hair, plastic trash of all kinds, broken cds, dental floss etc.) But this was a first for me; i keep thinking how satisfying it must have been to pour resin and fruit loops (most iconic of american cereals) into a hollow duck

#5 My current favorite wingwoman at our motel (off season rates so amazing, luxury room for two, $100 in palm springs!!); the devine Jacquelyne May, thanks buddy!

if i've piqued your interest it's too late, as always seems the case for living artists; this one misunderstood, maligned and closed down permanently now by the residents of the mega posh neighborhood he built this in.
Dear crazy palm springs robo lights guy, DON'T LET THE BASTARDS GET YOU DOWN!, best wishes and love from your fan, cynda mary

cmsa; sticking a fork in it; "Beware the Crone's Embrace" C Valle oil on linen, 50x40 inches...inspired by a video i watched sometime in the last couple years; It showed a local tradition in an english village called a " granny race". Where the 4 oldest ladies jump on the backs of the 4 youngest, strongest men, and they race through the village.
The title inspired by what it was like when me and my friend micheal assumed the position; He has to bend almost double to manage my greater weight. He is practically strangled to death with all my weight pulling just at his throat. He is completely at the mercy of "the crone" ; i thought it was great ; older women (in our culture) are thought to be the least dominate of people, in this position (at least) they hold ALL the power. ps. the young mans ear is just in the right position for the crone to give encouragement and shriek criticism, and she holds a riding crop under her elbow, in case he needs a swat on the bum to encourage him..
